A therapy session in Oregon costs $150–$250 in private practice. For many people, that number triggers sticker shock. But behind every invoice is a financial reality that most clients never see, and most therapists are too polite to explain.

The Real Numbers

According to Indeed and BLS data, the average annual salary for mental health therapists in Oregon is approximately $74,000–$86,000: depending on license type, setting, and experience. In Portland, the average is around $78,000. That sounds reasonable until you see what it costs to get there and stay there.

What Goes Into That Session Fee

• Education: A master's degree in counseling (minimum 60 semester hours) is required to pursue licensure from the OBLPCT. Most graduates carry $60,000–$120,000 in student debt
• Supervised experience: After graduating, aspiring LPCs must complete 1,900 hours of supervised direct client contact (reduced from 2,400 in July 2023). This typically takes 2–3 years while registered as a Professional Counselor Associate, often at community mental health wages of $20–$28/hour
• License maintenance: Oregon LPC renewal, continuing education (40 hours every 2 years, including 6 in ethics), professional liability insurance ($500–$1,500/year), and board fees add up to $1,500–$3,000 annually
• Office costs: Office rent in Portland metro runs $1,000–$2,000/month. In smaller cities, $400–$800. Plus furniture, technology, EHR software, billing systems

Compare that to other master's-level professions: an MBA in Portland averages $110,000+. A nurse practitioner: $120,000+. A software engineer with a bachelor's: $130,000+.
